Session #1

Date Unknown (1996)

This is the 1st 'official' CFD recording. It was recorded in my parents garage, where we rehersed during the lifetime of the band. Id say it was recorded in the fall, it wasnt too cold out. It was recorded with a boombox yet the quality is fucking good! Furthermore, I didnt even use a blank tape to record on, it was some commerically bought tape that I recorded over. We go thru a number of songs twice. Matt Rodgers came by for a visit. During the 'Coated Tounge Discussion' I give props to Joe for his impromptu use of the cry baby during 'Revenge'. Ironically months later at the 02/01/97 (rehersal) session, I dis Joe for doing the same thing. This is becuase I was/am a negative prick but more importantly becuase I was on acid. But we will get to that later. Anyways the 'Coated Tounge Discussion' we reherse the solo only with the crybaby and it is indeed awesome. After that I come upon the reazliation that the latter half of the 3rd section of the solo I am able to play all 6 notes where Joe always used pull offs (and so did I on the bass, previously). When we actually play 'Coated Tounge' in its entirety, I dont sing my short part in the 1st verse, Reid just yells 'Coated Tounge!' over and over again, which is actually kind of cool.

Also per our introduction, I guess this is one of the first ever versions of Skinner Box, which makes sense when you hear Jamey play a mid tempo beat in the intro rather then the typical super fast shit; the rest of the song is also insturmental, words were either not written yet or I just couldnt/didnt sing em.

The 'discussion' track is espically interesting. I recommend that we play 'Second Floor East' by Screeching Weasel which Jamey shoots down. He recommended we play 'Hanging Around' (which I dont think we ever played before). We settle on 'Bruce Lee vs. the Kiss Army' by Guttermouth. I don't remember playing this song at all, tho in this performance its on the money, we should have played it more. After the song you can hear my describe a 'bolt of lightning' in my head. This is a strange affliction which still haunts me to this day when I yell too hard into the mic. This might have been the 1st time its ever happend. AFter 'Bruce Lee' we discuss a number of other obscure Guttermouth songs such as 'Lock Down' and 'Race Track' but dont play any of them.

I think actually I'm the one playing guitar on that track, but I know I am on 'Screaming at a Wall' by Minor Threat. You can hear them laugh at me when I acidentally start to play with the distortion off. We play 'Oats' though without any words, kind of pointless since the song is just 4 notes played forever.

However the best cover in this set has to be 'Life O Reily', which Jamey then sings. This is revolutionary and must be heard to be believed. I think all of us were pretty giddy becuase of our amazement with how this came out. Then again maybe we are giddy just beucase we are ultra stoned. Somehow we double the awesomness with a wild half lounge version of it, which is amazing. We didn't rehserse this at all and never did it again, tho we shoudl have, its fucking awesome.

During 'Revenge' (take 2) reid plays palmmuted chords on the guitar rather then the usual solo bass. Its pretty awesome. All in all this is an awesome and important CFD recording, suprising since it was recorded on a boom box.
